Pantazis Elected to Second Term as ISS Board Chair

Birmingham attorney, artist, and alumni parent Elizabeth “Libby” Pantazis has been elected to serve a second three-year term as Chair of the Indian Springs School Board of Governors. The new term is effective immediately and extends through the Annual General Meeting in 2018.

“I am very honored to have been elected by my fellow Board members to serve a second term as Chair,” says Pantazis. “As we prepare to celebrate the achievement of our new, state-of-the-art classrooms and to move ahead in our planning for the school’s new dining hall and arts center, we look forward to sustaining the positive momentum of our building project while also working to protect and grow the school’s endowment. Both are critical to ensuring that we continue to define excellence in education for future generations of Springs students.”

Pantazis began her first term as Board Chair in April 2012. During the past three years, she has overseen the Campus Master Plan, which identified the need to replace or modernize aging buildings dating from 1952, and the $20 million Campaign for Springs Eternal, the largest capital campaign in ISS history.

“I believe that the success of all that we do as a Board—and as a school—lies in our commitment to the school’s mission,” says Pantazis. “Indian Springs’ mission charges us to develop in students ‘a love of learning, a sense of integrity and moral courage, and an ethic of participatory citizenship.’ The mission serves as our beacon, a powerful directive for all our efforts.”

ISS Board member Mike Goodrich ’90 says Pantazis’s leadership has been invaluable during an important time in the school’s history. “The passion and the commitment that Libby brings to the school are huge,” he says. “Her guidance has brought the Campus Master Plan to fruition.”

Fellow Board member Jimmy Lewis ’75, who is Chair of the Board’s Buildings and Grounds Committee, says the ISS community is fortunate to have Pantazis serving a second term. “Not only has Libby been instrumental in the success of Springs Eternal through her tireless efforts to educate and excite ISS stakeholders about the campaign and the need to position ISS for the future; she has also been continuously involved with the almost daily decisions required to keep the design and construction of the new facilities envisioned by the Campus Master Plan moving forward. Libby's insight and commitment to Indian Springs will be enjoyed and appreciated by present and future generations of ISS students, parents, alumni, and faculty."

Prior to her election as Board Chair, Pantazis worked as an attorney with Wiggins, Childs, Quinn & Pantazis in Birmingham, where she practiced civil rights law until her retirement in 2010. She has continued her career as an artist, focusing primarily on oil on canvas. Her paintings have been accepted to Energen Art Competitions and the juried Exhibit of the Forgotten Coast Plein Air Invitational, displayed in the Arceneaux Art Gallery in Homewood and Birmingham-area art shows, and submitted for inclusion in Art Galleries & Artists of the South magazine.

She has long been active in the ISS community, serving as a member of the school’s Parents Association and Board of Governors, where she has also served as Vice Chair, Chair-Elect, and a member of several committees.

In addition to her service to Springs, she also serves on the Boards of The Birmingham Art Association and The Pamela Project, which promotes awareness and education related to Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), a hidden congenital birth defect. A graduate of Mississippi College and the Mississippi College School of Law, she and her husband, Dennis, have three grown sons—ISS alumni D.G. '03, Lee '06, and Evan '09 Pantazis.
