Dr. Adrienne James Carter '94

Q: What challenges have you faced working during the COVID-19 pandemic?
A: It has been very challenging during this pandemic. I would not say that I was taking risks that emergency room staff or hospital physicians face during this period, but it is not without its challenges. The first weeks of the pandemic were very chaotic. We were not able to get testing for patients, and they were very frustrated. We had patients coming to the clinic ill with COVID 19, but there were no clear treatments or reassurances to give.

Q: How has your work changed during the COVID-19 pandemic?
A: Currently, during this period, we are doing telehealth video visits. This has been a great innovative move for us.

Q: What successes have you celebrated during the COVID-19 pandemic?
A: One of the wonderful things about my job is the relationships with my patients. At first, we felt so disconnected over the phone. The video has brought us back together. Although we are missing hugging and touching each other, we can still connect.

Q: What has been your most challenging moment working in healthcare?
A: What has been most challenging is balancing work and family. I have three children, ages 13, 11, and 8 who are currently at home and trying to complete the school year. At the same time, I am trying to take care of my patients, and I also need to coordinate my children’s needs. I feel like the school principal, the teacher, the janitor, the school nurse, and the lunch lady. It has been lots of fun.

Q: What has been your proudest moment working in healthcare?
A: My proudest moments are the recovery of my patients who have suffered through their COVID infections. I have a lot of medical professionals in my practice, and it is great to hear their stories and help them through this period.

Q: When and how did you decide to pursue a career in healthcare?
A: I decided to pursue a career in healthcare while in high school. I felt that it was a perfect marriage of science and ministry. I was born in Cooper Green Hospital, and I always had a desire to go back and serve the uninsured and underinsured patients of Jefferson County. I was blessed to be able to realize my dream and provide quality primary care for the patients there for over eight years before transitioning my practice to UAB.

Q: How did your experience at Springs shape your career choice?
A: Springs taught me the joy of learning. It helped to hone my inquisitive instincts. I am always learning from my patients and medical science.

Q: What advice would you give Springs students who want to pursue a career in healthcare?
A: I would tell students interested in health care to continue their love for learning. Physicians must be life long learners as science and medical knowledge continually change. You never stop learning. Students should also recognize the importance of having mentors that can guide them and provide valuable advice about matriculating through college and medical school.

Q: What can the Springs community do to help during the COVID-19 pandemic?
A: First, follow all guidelines. Don’t go out unless you absolutely must, wear a face covering, maintain physical distance, and do all of the things that we know can keep us all safe. This is the most helpful because it keeps us all, but especially health care workers safe. Also, look out for your fellow man. There is a lot of anxiety, right know. Please take the time to say a kind word or offer a smile to those you see in passing.
