Five Students Awarded at State Science Fair

Five Indian Springs students received awards in the Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair held virtually on April 9 and 10.

Catherine Kung ’22 won second place in the category of Computer Science & Engineering for her project, “Processing of Sensory Information from a Bio-Inspired Flexible Artificial Skin Using a Kohonen Artificial Neural Network.” She also received an award from The Society for In Vitro Biology.

Simon Ma ’22 won third place in the category of Medicine and Health Science for his project, “ADM-MCRP Net: An Auxiliary Diagnosis Method for Leukemia Based on Multo-GRP-Nets.” He also received the Yale Science and Engineering Association Award.

Hooper Markert ’21 received an honorable mention in the category of Medicine and Health Science for his project, “Resonant Frequencies as a Means of Detecting Metastases and Characterizing Pediatric Tumor Type.”

Amitis Moradkhani ’22 won third place in the category of Earth and Environmental Science for her project, “Dye Removal with GO Reinforced Nanocomposite MOFs.” She also received the Association for Women Geoscientists Award and the U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize.

Mayu Nakano ’23 won second place in the category of Medicine and Health Science for her project, “Intra-tumoral Heterogeneity in Gene Expression within Single Glioblastoma Tumors.”

Catherine, Amitis, and Mayu will advance to compete at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair after earning top honors at the regional fair.
