Two of Indian Springs School’s mock trial teams are heading to nationals after placing in the top four at the 2024 Alabama YMCA Youth in Government Youth Judicial Competition held in Montgomery on November 1-3.
Four teams of Indian Springs students advanced to the state level after qualifying at the regional competition in October. Three of those teams placed in the top ten in the state, while two will advance to the national competition.
Team “Hendricks” placed third overall in the competition and will compete at nationals: Jadyn Daniel ’25, Evie Frohsin ’25, Jackson Geisen ’25, Ben Simms ’25, Ann Charles Sutton ’25, Balint Weiszbart ’25, and Rosie Zhang ’27.
Team “Hamm” placed fourth overall in the competition and will compete at nationals: Marcus Edwards ’25, Catherine Hinson ’25, Rebecca Howard ’25, Roman Kessen ’25, Radyn Moradkhani ’25, Kane Perry ’25, and Michelle Tate ’27.
Team “Hendricks” also received the Hugh Maddox Award, which recognizes the most outstanding team for their performance in the courtroom as well as their character and statesmanship outside the courtroom. The award was named after former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Hugh Maddox, who helped to establish the YMCA Youth Judicial program in Alabama in 1979.
Six team members received individual awards: Evie Frohsin ’25 and Andrew Grover ’27 were awarded as “Outstanding Attorneys,” while Gabrielle Hawthorne ’27, Rebecca Howard ’25, Ann Charles Sutton ’25, and Grayson Whitman ’26 were awarded as “Outstanding Witnesses.”
Samuel White ’25 served as a judge, and Isaac Rutsky ’27 served as a bailiff during the state competition, assisting in the overall management and execution of the entire event.
The Alabama YMCA Youth in Government program gives youth the opportunity to learn firsthand about government and civic issues by taking an active role in the democratic process, boosting youth development, and contributing to a stronger community.
